Principal: Alexandria Gillcrese
Mrs. Alexandria Gillcrese lives in Lexington, SC and has been with the school since our opening day! Mrs. Gillcrese taught 2nd and 3rd grade for the first three years of SC Calvert and served as the 2012-2013 teacher of the year. Mrs. Gillcrese was also our Assistant Principal for one year before becoming Principal.
Mrs. Gillcrese received her undergraduate degree in Elementary Education from Lander University in Greenwood. She received her M. Ed in Administration and Supervision from Southern Wesleyan University in Columbia, South Carolina.
Prior to coming to South Carolina Calvert Academy, Mrs. Gillcrese worked in Lexington/Richland School District Five for 11 years. During those years, she taught 2nd grade, 4th grade, and 5th grade. She also served as an InTech specialist where she assisted teachers with incorporating technology into the classroom.
Mrs. Gillcrese is married to Nicholas, who is an educator as well. Together they have four beautiful girls: Brooke, Blaire, Baylee, and Braelyn.
Administrative Assistant: Kay Henninger
Mrs. Kay Henninger from Orangeburg, South Carolina has worked in education since 1994. First as a substitute teacher then later as an Administrative Office Professional in several areas including Federal Programs, Exceptional Services and Power School. This will be her second year working with a Charter School. She is excited and looking forward to a great year with the SC Calvert Academy family.
Mrs. Kay (as she likes to be called) is married and has two adult children who also attended a virtual charter school. Mrs. Kay and her husband have a small farm that includes 2 horses, a host of chickens, and ducks along with a huge garden. When she’s not working or farming she quilts and crafts.
Kindergarten and 1st Grade: Kate Wade

2nd Grade: Mrs. Kimberly Byrd
Mrs. Kimberly Byrd is a 2nd grade teacher at South Carolina Calvert Academy. This is her third year teaching at SCCAL, but she has 12 years of teaching experience, nine years of which has been in 2nd grade. She currently resides in Greenville County with her husband and three children.
Mrs. Byrd enjoys volunteering in the community and making a difference in others’ lives. She is very excited to begin the new year and meet her new students!
3rd Grade: Mrs. Mayra Velilla-Ryte
Mrs. Mayra Velilla-Ryte is a graduate of Western Governors University with her Elementary Education degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. This will be her fourth year teaching and she loves being a part of the growing family of SC Calvert educators! She resides with her husband and daughter in Rock Hill. She also has a daughter who is married and resides in Knoxville, TN, a son attending Penn State and majoring in Mechanical Engineering, a son at Fort Bragg in the 82nd Airborne Division of the Army, a daughter who is a sophomore at Rock Hill High School, and three stepchildren.
Mrs. Velilla-Ryte enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, working in the yard and all things historical. She is looking forward to another exciting year with her students, parents and fellow SC Calvert staff!
4th Grade: Mrs. Leslie Bussey
Mrs. Leslie Bussey is a graduate of Lander University and University of South Carolina – Aiken. She holds an Early Childhood Education degree and a Master of Elementary Education degree along with National Board Certification. She is excited to be a part of the Calvert family after spending 4 years as a Technology Integration Specialist in a Lexington K-5 elementary school and 12 years of teaching first and second grades in Greenwood, Aiken, and Lexington. She currently lives in Lexington and has been married to her high school sweetheart, Ronnie, for 24 years. They have 2 daughters, ages 16 and 20.
Some of Mrs. Bussey’s favorite things to do are reading (She LOVES to read!), baking, hiking, watching a good movie, painting, traveling, and spending time with family. Some of her favorite places to spend time are in “artsy” little coffee shops, at church, and in the mountains.
She is thrilled to be a part of the Calvert family and looks forward to a wonderful year of learning!
5th Grade: Mrs. Rachel Rengering
Mrs. Rachel Rengering is a Columbia College graduate with her Masters from Walden University in Integrating Technology in the Classroom. She’s been teaching since 2006, and joined the SCCAL family in 2013. She lives with her husband, 2 young children, and their dog in Chapin.
When she isn’t teaching, Mrs. Rengering loves singing, traveling to see family, volunteering with her church, and spending time with friends. She loves teaching at SCCAL because it is a unique environment for students to learn in their own best way. She loves getting to know her students during the live classes each week.
Middle School Math: Mrs. Brooke Michael
Mrs. Brooke Michael is originally from Ohio and graduated from Bowling Green State University in Middle School Math and Social Studies. She moved to the Columbia area in 2005 and loves the fact that she does not have to deal with the northern winters anymore.
In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, traveling to new places, and being outdoors. Mrs. Michael is thrilled to be part of the SC Calvert team and looks forward to the upcoming school year.
Middle School Science: Mrs. Morgan Mobley
Mrs. Morgan Mobley is a graduate of Presbyterian College and has her Master’s degree from Clemson University. This will be her seventh year of teaching. She is married with three children as well as three dogs and four cats.
Mrs. Mobley loves all the different aspects of science and, when she is not teaching, she enjoys being with her family and being outside.
She is looking forward to another great year with SC Calvert!
6th and 7th Grade Social Studies and 6th Grade ELA: Mrs. Nicole Byars
Mrs. Nicole Byars is entering her tenth year of teaching, her second with SCCAL. She previously taught Social Studies and Reading at a Florida public high school and Social Studies for two years for Florida Virtual School.
Mrs. Byars and her family moved to Myrtle Beach from Florida last spring. They are actively involved in NewSpring church where her husband is on staff. They have a 4-year-old son named Bryson who is full of energy and joy! She loves spending time with her family, playing and watching sports, outdoor activities, and reading.
“I am so excited for another great year at SC Calvert Academy,” says Mrs. Byars. “I look forward to meeting and working with many great families this year!”
7th and 8th Grade ELA and 8th Grade Social Studies: Mrs. Amanda Youngblood
Prior to coming to SC Calvert Academy, Mrs. Amanda Youngblood taught for five years in Easley and two years in Greenville. Before entering the education field, she worked for over 11 years in the hospitality community. She has a Bachelor of Science from Clemson University and a Master of Arts in Teaching Middle Grades also from Clemson University.
When Mrs. Youngblood isn’t teaching, she enjoys spending time with family. She and her husband have two daughters, ages eleven and eight who keep them on their toes. “We enjoy cooking, traveling, reading and cheering for our Clemson Tigers,” says Mrs. Youngblood.

Special Education Teacher: Mrs. Carla Clardy
Mrs. Carla Clardy is an Anderson University graduate with her Elementary Degree as well as certification in Early Childhood and Special Education Learning Disabilities. She has been married to her high school sweetheart for 21 years. They have two children, a 13-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter. They also have two cats, two parrots, and one dog.
In her spare time, Mrs. Clardy loves to travel, leads a youth group with her husband at their church, leads a Girl Scout Troop, and spends time with family and friends. She is very excited to start her fourth year with the SC Calvert family!
Special Education Coordinator/Teacher: Mrs. Samantha Sloan
Mrs. Samantha Sloan resides in Rock Hill with her husband and two children. This is her fourth year with SC Calvert as Special Education Coordinator and 504 Coordinator. She has experience in Preschool–12th grades in special education in many different capacities.
This is her fifteenth year teaching. Mrs. Sloan has her master’s degree and is National Board certified. She is looking forward to another fabulous year with SC Calvert Academy.
Reading Coach: Mrs. Monica Addison
Mrs. Monica Addison lives in Irmo, SC with her husband and two children, a 17-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter. She is a graduate of Clemson University and has also earned Masters degrees from Cambridge College and Grand Canyon University. She is also a National Board Certified Teacher.
Prior to coming to SCCAL, Mrs. Addison taught for 22 years in Lexington/Richland District 5 and Richland District 2, having also served for 6 years as a Teacher Specialist and Instructional Coach in programs through the SC Department of Education. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her family. She looks forward to a third excellent year at SC Calvert Academy!
